LASU, UNFPA, AND CRPSGBV COLLABORATE TO COMBAT GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE AT IDP CAMP AND SEXUAL ASSAULT REFERENCE CENTRE
….Visit highlights commitment to GBVIE Course
The Lagos State University (LASU), in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund ( UNFPA Nigeria ) and the Centre for Response and Prevention of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence CRPSGBV, on Thursday, 25th April 2024, recently visited the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Igando and the IDERA Sexual Assault Reference Centre at Igando General Hospital. This visit was part of the ongoing “Training the Trainers” programme, which aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to combat gender-based violence (GBV) in emergencies.
During the visit, the facilitators and participants conducted a GBV audit and observed the operations of the two centres. They also familiarised themselves with the mission and core values of the Gender-Based Violence in Emergencies (GBViE) Course.
At the IDP Camp, the group was welcomed by Mr Olukolade Simeon Olatunbosun, the Camp Commandant/Head of Special Duties at the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Igando Centre. He expressed his gratitude for the visit and highlighted that Lagos State is the only state in Nigeria with a permanent IDP camp, which has provided shelter to over 30,000 migrants during natural disasters, armed conflicts, and community violence.
The next stop was the IDERA Sexual Assault Reference Centre at Igando General Hospital. Mrs Moromoke Babatunde-Martins, the Centre Manager, warmly received the facilitators and participants. She expressed her delight that LASU is the first institution in the South-West region to offer this kind of training, which will empower the participants to become trainers for other institutions.
The participants found the visit to the two centres insightful, as it provided them with a deeper understanding of the challenges and efforts being made to address gender-based violence in emergencies. The two-week training programme will conclude with a closing ceremony tomorrow, Friday, 26th April 2024 at Femi Gbajabiamila Conference Centre, LASU main campus, Ojo, Lagos.
