EBONYI STATE UNIVERSITY (EBSU) EXPELS THREE STUDENTS OVER ALLEGED POSSESSION OF FIREARMS

The management of Ebonyi State University (EBSU) has expelled three students for allegedly being in unlawful possession of firearms.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Michael Awoke, announced the expulsion during the inauguration of the newly elected Students’ Union Government (SUG) executives held at the university campus over the weekend.

Professor Awoke stated that the university’s decision was intended to serve as a deterrent to other students, warning that the institution would no longer tolerate acts of cultism, examination malpractice, or possession of weapons used to intimidate students or staff.

“This issue of cultism is banned in Ebonyi State University as long as I remain Vice Chancellor,” Awoke said. “The issue of coming to the university with guns or using them to intimidate lecturers to award marks must stop with immediate effect.”

He confirmed that the expelled students were already before a court of competent jurisdiction, adding that the university was following the case closely to ensure justice is served.

“Being a student and unlawfully having a gun you use to intimidate fellow students or staff is unacceptable,” he added. “This expulsion will serve as a deterrent to others. By the powers vested in me as Vice Chancellor of Ebonyi State University, these students are hereby rusticated. They are no longer my students.”

Reports indicate that the three students were arrested by the police for being in possession of guns and live ammunition during the recently concluded Students’ Union Government election at the university. They allegedly shot to scare students and attempted to attack the Dean of Student Affairs.

The university management reiterated its commitment to maintaining discipline and ensuring a safe, violence-free academic environment.
