WASSCE 2026: WAEC CLARIFIES REGISTRATION GUIDELINES FOR SCHOOLS

WASSCE 2026: WAEC CLARIFIES REGISTRATION GUIDELINES FOR SCHOOLS

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued clarifications on the registration of candidates for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.

In a memo addressed to school principals, Officer-in-Charge, Avong Matthias Laah, highlighted key points regarding registration deadlines, subject selections, and the flexibility of subject combinations. The memo emphasized that candidates can register for subjects outside their core groups, provided proper procedures are followed on the registration portal.

According to WAEC, candidates who wish to pursue computer-related courses in tertiary institutions are not restricted by the absence of a computer-related subject in WASSCE 2026. Candidates only need five credit passes, including English, General Mathematics, Physics, and two other science subjects, to apply for programs such as Computer Science or Computer Engineering.

The memo also clarified rules regarding Trade Subjects. Registration without a Trade Subject is permitted, with only English and General Mathematics being compulsory. Specific Trade Subjects, including Fashion Design, Beauty and Cosmetology, Computer Hardware and GSM Repairs, Livestock Farming, Solar Photovoltaic Installation, Catering Craft, and Horticulture and Crop Production, remain available only to candidates who previously studied the corresponding old curriculum subjects. Candidates’ CASS scores from their previous Trade Subjects can be used in the new registration.

WAEC reminded schools to meet deadlines: CASS 1 & 2 uploads and offline registration must be completed by December 31, 2025, while online registration closes on January 17, 2026. Schools that fail to meet these deadlines may incur fines or risk forfeiting registration privileges.

The Council concluded by urging schools to embrace the new National policies and to contact the WAEC office for any clarifications or assistance.
