WAEC POSTPONES FULL COMPUTER-BASED WASSCE TO 2027
The West African Examinations Council has postponed the full rollout of computer-based testing for the Senior School Certificate Examinations to 2027, moving it from the 2026 deadline earlier set by the Federal Government.
The Chairman of the Nigeria National Committee of WAEC, Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, disclosed this at the opening session of the 63rd Annual Meeting of the Committee in Umuahia, Abia State. She explained that the 2026 May/June WASSCE will now serve only as a pilot phase, giving candidates the option to write their examinations either through CBT or the traditional paper-and-pen format.
Abdulkadir noted concerns raised by stakeholders about the initial 2026 deadline and assured that no candidate participating in the 2026 examination would be placed at a disadvantage. She added that the council is already training students to familiarize them with using tablets and responding to questions digitally.
She further clarified that science students remain eligible to take Economics as an elective subject, while the window for uploading Continuous Assessment Scores has been extended to ensure accurate data capture for candidates taking new subjects under the revised subject list approved for WASSCE 2026.
WAEC has continued to refine the Basic and Secondary School Curricula, ensuring flexibility in subject selection across different groups and fields.
During the meeting, the council also celebrated outstanding performers from the 2024 May/June examination. Master Ajisafe Qoreebullah Olamilekan of Eemaan Foundation College, Osogbo, emerged as the overall best candidate nationwide, receiving the National Distinction Award, while visually impaired candidates and other category winners were similarly recognized.
The shift to 2027 aligns with the Federal Government’s broader plan to migrate all public examinations to full computer-based testing, as earlier announced by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa.
