LASU CLARIFIES HYBRID LEARNING POLICY, SAYS PHYSICAL CLASSES REMAIN FULLY ACTIVE

Only 197 Of 4,095 Courses Affected

The Lagos State University LASU has issued a formal clarification following a recent publication titled “Assessing LASU’s Online Classes Directive”, which the institution says presents a one-sided and misleading account of its decision to move some large-capacity classes to virtual platforms.

According to the university’s management, contrary to claims suggesting a full migration to online learning, only 197 out of the 4,095 courses offered across the institution are delivered primarily online. These are strictly courses with enrolments exceeding 400 students.

LASU explained that the measure is aimed at improving the quality of learning for high-enrolment classes and aligns with modern blended teaching methods. The university emphasized that the majority of tutorials, seminars, lab sessions, and smaller classes will continue in person, and students are still required to be on campus for most of their academic activities.

The management expressed regret over the misinformation circulating about the blended learning policy, noting that the directive is a focused effort to manage large classes more effectively, similar to practices in other leading universities.

The university refuted claims that students have been instructed to stay at home for online classes, describing the narrative as incorrect and misleading. LASU emphasised that less than 5 percent of its total courses are affected, while students remain fully engaged with campus life and its facilities.

The institution also stated that its blended learning policy aligns with the National Universities Commission NUC’s efforts to mainstream e-learning in Nigerian higher education. To support this, LASU has invested in upgraded campus Wi-Fi, ICT hubs, and reliable power supply to minimise connectivity challenges.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to transparency and innovative teaching methods that best serve students. She noted that the decision is a data-driven academic approach aimed at optimising physical resources and preparing students for a digital future.

LASU urged students and parents to rely on its official communication channels for accurate information, describing the policy as a bold step towards building a more resilient and future-ready institution.
