KASU GRADUATE WINS PRESIDENT’S NYSC HONOUR AWARD FOR TRANSFORMING LIVES OF DEAF STUDENTS IN KOGI

In an inspiring testament to service, innovation, and humanity, Andrew Paul Nkom, a 2021 graduate of Architecture from Kaduna State University (KASU), has been honoured with the prestigious President’s NYSC Honour Award for his exceptional contributions during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year in Kogi State.

Posted to the Headquarters Command Army Records Cantonment Maintenance Group, Nigerian Army Engineers, Nkom distinguished himself beyond his primary assignment by addressing the critical needs of the Lokoja School for the Deaf. Drawing from his professional skills, he initiated and executed impactful projects that significantly improved both learning and sanitary conditions at the school.

As part of his Community Development Service (CDS), he constructed and donated 100 wooden reading tables and chairs, providing students with a dignified and conducive study environment. He also built a modern soak-away system to strengthen sanitation and rehabilitated the school’s dilapidated toilets, restoring hygiene, safety, and convenience for staff and students alike.

These interventions not only upgraded the school’s infrastructure but also transformed the daily experiences of its students, creating an enabling environment where both learning and well-being could thrive.

In recognition of his outstanding service, the Kogi State Government, in collaboration with the NYSC, presented him with a Certificate of Honour at the end of his service year. His efforts later earned him the President’s NYSC Honour Award—a rare distinction reserved for corps members whose service leaves a lasting impact on their host communities.

The Management of Kaduna State University congratulated Nkom, describing his achievement as a shining example of KASU graduates who continue to raise the institution’s profile while contributing meaningfully to national development.

Andrew Paul Nkom’s story is a powerful reminder that with skill, compassion, and dedication, one individual can truly uplift an entire community.
