OAU MEDICAL STUDENT COMMITS SUICIDE AFTER EXAM FAILURE
The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has confirmed the death of Ajibola Ibitayo, a Part Two Dentistry student, who allegedly took his own life after failing his examinations.
According to the university’s spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju, the results released on Wednesday showed that Ibitayo would have to repeat the class for the second consecutive year. He reportedly took his life by injecting himself at his parents’ home in Ejigbo, Osun State.
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Bamire, described the incident as tragic and urged students to see failure as a temporary setback rather than the end of life. He extended condolences to the bereaved family and the university community.
“This is a sad situation. No amount of failure is worth taking one’s life. Failing in school doesn’t mean you are a failure in life. Many successful people today were not top performers during their school days, and some dropouts have gone on to make significant impacts in society,” a statement read.
