SSANU, NASU Reject FG’s Disbursement Formula for N50 Billion Earned Allowances

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has voiced strong opposition to the Federal Government’s proposed sharing formula for the recently approved N50 billion earned allowances for university-based unions.

In a joint statement titled “Unjust Distribution of the Approved N50 Billion for University Unions”, the unions condemned the reported allocation, which gives a staggering 80 percent of the total sum to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), leaving the remaining 20 percent to be shared among SSANU, NASU, and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

The statement, signed by JAC Chairman and SSANU President, Mohamed Ibrahim, and NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi, described the formula as “lopsided, grossly unfair, and totally unacceptable.” The unions warned that such an imbalance could trigger industrial unrest across the university system.

“This kind of allocation only deepens the divide between teaching and non-teaching staff in Nigerian universities,” the statement read. “It undermines the contributions of non-academic staff and sends a message that their roles are less valued.”

SSANU and NASU called for a more equitable and transparent distribution of the funds, stressing that a harmonious academic environment is only possible when all university workers are treated with fairness, dignity, and respect.

The unions urged the Federal Government to urgently revisit the disbursement formula to prevent further tension in the tertiary education sector.
