UNIJOS APPOINTS PROFESSOR VICTORIA LAWAL AS NEW UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN


 

The University of Jos has appointed Professor Victoria Ladi Lawal as its new University Librarian for a five-year term. The appointment was made by the 15th Governing Council of the university, effective February 14, 2025.

Professor Lawal, a renowned expert in Library and Information Science, was selected from a pool of candidates interviewed by the university’s Selection Board. Her appointment marks a milestone in the university’s history, as she becomes the first female Professor of Library and Information Science in the University of Jos and in Plateau State.

 

Until her appointment, Professor Lawal was a lecturer with the Library and Information Science Unit, Department of Social Science Education, Faculty of Education, University of Jos. She has a wealth of experience in library management, having worked in the University of Jos Library from 1995 to 2016, where she headed different sections, including Technical and Support Services.

 

Professor Lawal holds a Bachelor’s degree in Library Science from the University of Maiduguri, a Master’s degree in Law and Diplomacy from the University of Jos, a Master of Library Science from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. She has also served as a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Fort Hare, South Africa.

 

A prolific researcher, Professor Lawal has published widely and presented her papers in different countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and other African countries.

 

The university community is optimistic that Professor Lawal’s appointment will bring about significant developments in the university’s library services, given her wealth of experience and expertise in library management.

 

The appointment was announced by the university’s Senior Deputy Registrar (Information & Publications), Abdullahi Abdullahi, in a statement dated February 7, 2025.
