MINISTRY CLARIFIES PROPOSAL FOR 12-YEAR BASIC EDUCATION SYSTEM
The Ministry of Education has shed more light on the proposed introduction of a 12-year basic education system, which aims to scrap the existing Junior and Senior Secondary School structure. According to the ministry, this policy is still in its proposal stage and will not be implemented immediately.
In a statement signed by the Director of Press, Folasade Boriowo, the ministry emphasized that the National Council on Education (NCE) will review the proposal before any final decision is made. The proposal was presented by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, at an extraordinary National Council on Education meeting held in Abuja on February 6, 2025.
The proposed 12-year basic education system seeks to provide compulsory education while retaining the current 6-3-3 structure. However, the ministry stressed that this remains subject to further consultation and deliberation.
To ensure a well-informed decision, the ministry plans to engage in extensive stakeholder consultations over the next eight months. This will involve education policymakers, state governments, teachers, parents, and other key players.
The final decision on whether to adopt this reform will be made at the National Council on Education meeting in October 2025.
