UNILAG MATRICULATES 9,179 STUDENTS FOR 2025/2026 SESSION, CHARGES THEM ON DISCIPLINE AND INTEGRITY

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, matriculated 9,179 students into its 2025/2026 academic session. The cohort includes admissions through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), Direct Entry (DE), and the Institute of Continuing Education (ICE).

At the ceremony held in the Jelili Omotola (Multipurpose) Hall, Vice-Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, congratulated the freshers on gaining entry into “the University of First Choice and the Nation’s Pride.” She credited their success to merit, hard work, and diligence.

Prof. Ogunsola described the event as the start of a transformative chapter demanding discipline, leadership, character, responsibility, and purpose. She urged the students to uphold honour, honesty, and dignity, while steering clear of vices like cultism, negative peer pressure, examination malpractice, drug abuse, and sexual exploitation.

The Vice-Chancellor, joined by principal officers and deans, encouraged freshers to leverage UNILAG’s support services, including library facilities, research and entrepreneurship centres, mentorship programmes, and innovation hubs. She framed their time at UNILAG as a journey of personal discovery, character building, and preparation for life beyond campus.

“You will face academic demands that test your abilities and resilience,” she advised. “Embrace them as opportunities for growth, adopting a mindset that turns setbacks into learning experiences rather than reasons for retreat.”

Prof. Ogunsola warned against derogatory social media posts misrepresenting UNILAG or Nigeria, noting their harm to nation-building and future career prospects. She called for intellectual engagement, constructive student activities, policy familiarization, and early guidance-seeking.

The ceremony peaked with University Registrar Mrs. Abosede Victoria Wickliffe administering the Matriculation Oath to students presented by their faculty deans.
