NORTHWEST UNIVERSITY KANO APPOINTS PROF. AMINA BAYERO AS VICE CHANCELLOR

Northwest University Kano has appointed Professor Amina Salihi Bayero as its substantive Vice Chancellor for a five-year term, effective December 1, 2025.

The decision followed a rigorous selection process and received ratification at the institution’s 47th Special Council Meeting on December 11, 2025. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State had earlier approved the appointment, with Pro-Chancellor Professor Hafiz Abubakar, MFR, formally conveying it.

In a message from the university’s Visitor read at the meeting, the governor congratulated Prof. Bayero, prayed for divine guidance, and urged her to meet the expectations of the university community and Kano residents.

Born on June 11, 1970, in Chiranchi Quarters, Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State, Prof. Bayero is a distinguished analytical chemist. She attended G/Galadima Girls Primary School, Government Girls Secondary School Kwa, and Bayero University Kano (BUK), earning her B.Sc., M.Sc., PGDE, and Ph.D. there.

Her over-three-decade career began with National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at BUK in 1991. She later worked at the Kano State Ministry of Education, Kano State Polytechnic, and joined NORTHWEST UNIVERSITY KANO as a pioneer staff in 2013. She has also served as a visiting lecturer at Federal University Dutse and as Dean/Director at Azman University Kano.

At NORTHWEST UNIVERSITY KANO, she advanced from Senior Lecturer (2013) to Associate Professor (2017) and full Professor (2020). Her administrative roles include two stints as Head of Department, two as Dean of the Faculty of Science, Congregation Representative to the Governing Council, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), and most recently, Director of the Centre for Gender and Family Development.

Prof. Bayero boasts extensive publications in environmental chemistry, toxicology, food chemistry, and heavy metal analysis, featured in journals like the Indonesian Journal of Chemical Analysis and Journal of Material Protection. She authored the Category “A” book Total Phenolic and Flavonoid Contents of Some Vegetables and holds fellowships with the Chemical Society of Nigeria and the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria. She remains active in various professional and community bodies.

In her acceptance speech, she thanked the governor, council, and university community, vowing accountable and transparent leadership. She unveiled a 14-Point Agenda to steer her administration.

Prof. Bayero immediately proceeded to her office for the handover from the Acting Vice Chancellor.

Her appointment is poised to boost NORTHWEST UNIVERSITY KANO’s academic standing, research output, and administrative efficiency.
