ATBU DISOWNS DISRUPTIVE GROUP AT SENATE PUBLIC HEARING ON UNIVERSITY AMENDMENT BILL
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, has dissociated itself from a group of youths that disrupted a public hearing organised by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund over a bill seeking to amend the institution’s establishing law.
The public hearing, which commenced on Thursday, 11 December 2025, at about 2:00 p.m., was convened to consider a bill sponsored by the Senator representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, Alhaji Shehu Buba. The proposed amendment seeks to change ATBU’s status from a Science and Technology-based university to a conventional university.
Proceedings were, however, abruptly adjourned following what was described as an unconventional disruption by individuals who claimed to be alumni of the university. Some media reports subsequently identified the group as graduates of ATBU.
In a press release issued by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, the university firmly rejected any association with the individuals involved, describing them as impostors who are not graduates of the institution.
The university stated that ATBU has, for over four decades, produced disciplined graduates who have served as worthy ambassadors across the globe, stressing that its alumni would not engage in actions capable of disrespecting the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
While expressing regret over the incident that led to the adjournment of the hearing, the management urged stakeholders and the general public to be cautious of persons falsely presenting themselves as graduates of ATBU in matters relating to or conducted on behalf of the university.
