Atalanta handed Chelsea their first defeat of the European campaign on Tuesday night, sealing a hard-fought 2-1 victory in front of a charged crowd at the Stadio di Bergamo. The hosts took control early in the second half when Gianluca Scamacca rose highest to nod in the opener. Chelsea hit back almost immediately, as João Pedro finished off a sharp low cross from Reece James. The goal was initially ruled out but later reinstated after a VAR check.

Despite the equaliser, Chelsea lacked urgency and were eventually punished. In the 83rd minute, Charles De Ketelaere found space on the edge of the box, and his deflected strike wrong-footed Robert Sánchez to seal the win for Atalanta.

The defeat allows Atalanta to move above Chelsea in the standings as competition for the knockout places heats up.

Full Time: Atalanta 2-1 Chelsea
Scorers: Scamacca 48′, João Pedro 54′, De Ketelaere 83′
