UNIABUJA APPOINTS PROF. HAKEEM FAWEHINMI AS NEW VICE-CHANCELLOR


The Governing Council of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has approved the appointment of Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of the institution.

The announcement was made during the 80th Extraordinary Meeting of Council held on Friday, November 7, 2025, under the chairmanship of Distinguished Senator (Dr.) Olanrewaju Tejuoso.

According to the Council’s decision, the appointment takes effect from Tuesday, February 10, 2026, and will run for a single, non-renewable tenure of five years.

Professor Fawehinmi, who currently serves as the Pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the Nigerian British University, Abia State, will take over from the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mathew Adamu, whose tenure has been extended by the Council until February 10, 2026. Professor Adamu was initially appointed on August 11, 2025, by the Federal Government.

Academic Profile

Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi is a distinguished scholar of Clinical Anatomy and Biomedical Anthropology with a long record of service and leadership in Nigeria’s university system. He has held several key positions at the University of Port Harcourt, including Head of Department of Anatomy (2005–2009), Associate Dean (2010–2012), Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences (2012–2014), and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) (2016–2020).

He has served on several statutory and ad-hoc committees, contributing immensely to academic policy and institutional growth. He is a Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland (FRAI) and the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria (FAMedS).

Prof. Fawehinmi has authored over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and 37 conference abstracts, and participated in more than 78 conferences and workshops across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and North America. He delivered the 111th Inaugural Lecture of the University of Port Harcourt in 2014 titled “Different Tailors for the Same People; Same Surgeon for Different People.”

A well-decorated academic, he has also attracted several national and international research grants and holds a Federal Government patent for his invention of the AMRG Anthropometry Chair for Dimensional Body Measurements.

He is married to Dr. Hadeezat O. Fawehinmi, a lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt, and they are blessed with five children.
