ASUU TO BEGIN NATIONWIDE STRIKE TOMORROW AS ULTIMATUM EXPIRES
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced plans to commence a nationwide strike tomorrow, following the expiration of its 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government.
ASUU, in a statement issued after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, said the decision became necessary due to government’s failure to address long-standing issues, including unpaid salary arrears, promotion backlogs, revitalization funds, and the re-negotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement.
The Federal Government, through the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, had earlier appealed for restraint, reaffirming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive that students must remain in school while dialogue continues.
Despite the government’s assurances, ASUU insists that no concrete action has been taken, prompting the union to declare the commencement of a two-week warning strike starting tomorrow, which could lead to a total and indefinite shutdown if demands remain unmet.
