Four Years of Endless Milestones for LASU VC, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello

Over the past four years, Lagos State University (LASU), under the dynamic leadership of Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, has recorded remarkable achievements that continue to redefine the institution’s place among Nigeria’s foremost universities. From groundbreaking infrastructural projects to digital transformation, from welfare-oriented initiatives to global recognition, her tenure has been marked by visionary strides that leave a lasting legacy.

Some of these milestones include the completion of five new ultra-modern hostel facilities in line with the University’s strategic policy to evolve into a fully residential campus, the establishment of a Centre for Gender-Based Violence Response, the introduction of wheat bread production on campus to promote healthy living, and the advancement of LASU as the most digitally advanced state university in Nigeria.

Segio Campus Reports has consistently covered LASU’s updates and followed closely the remarkable achievements of Prof. Olatunji-Bello’s administration, in no particular order, from the unveiling of the state-of-the-art catering facility, to the introduction of ultra-modern student hostels, the renovation of the University’s sporting complex, and the successful co-hosting of the FASU Games Lagos 2024. Her leadership has also birthed the innovative Smart ID Cards for staff and students, which serve as both identity and payment cards, ensuring seamless access to academic, financial, and security services across the University.

In health, LASU Health Centre achieved a groundbreaking feat in February 2024 when it secured HEFAMAA accreditation as a full hospital, becoming the only tertiary institution health facility in Lagos State with such recognition. That same year, the LASU Water Plant earned the prestigious NAFDAC approval (A1-105343) after a successful on-site inspection, further boosting the University’s reputation for quality and safety.

The academic profile of LASU has also risen significantly under her leadership. In 2024, the University recorded a historic feat of 100% NUC accreditation for all its courses assessed, a testament to her administration’s commitment to academic excellence. To further consolidate this progress, the University introduced new degree programmes and established the Faculty of Computing, a bold step that expands academic frontiers, meets global demands in technology-driven disciplines, and boosts LASU’s competitive edge in higher education.

Technology has been one of the strongest signatures of her tenure. The evidence is there for the world to see: LASU has become Nigeria’s most digitally advanced state university, sweeping multiple national awards for innovation. Under her watch, the Directorate of ICT introduced game-changing systems such as the online deferment platform, which allows students to apply for, track, and monitor the status of their deferment requests without stress. Similarly, the Intra-University Transfer process, once a tedious paper-based exercise, was digitalized in the 2023/2024 academic session. Students can now apply for transfers online, departments can review applications digitally, and approvals move seamlessly from the Committee Chairman to Senate, all within the same portal. These innovations, alongside the automation of postgraduate processes and transcript issuance, have set LASU apart as a model of 21st-century efficiency in higher education.

Equally remarkable was the introduction of the first-ever “Chat with Madam VC,” a groundbreaking interactive forum that gave students a direct channel to express their concerns, ideas, and aspirations through verified and accredited campus media houses, with Segio Campus Reports present at the maiden edition. What made the initiative outstanding was not just the openness of the Vice-Chancellor to listen, but her proven record of following through. Every commitment made during these engagements has been fulfilled, a rare hallmark of leadership where words and promises are matched with deliberate action. This initiative has redefined student–administration relations, making inclusiveness and accountability a cornerstone of her tenure.

Today, Segio Campus Reports joins the LASU community in celebrating a Vice Chancellor whose visionary leadership has not only transformed the University but also positioned it as a model of excellence, innovation, and student-centered growth. Her four years of service reaffirm that great leadership is not measured only in projects delivered, but in the lives touched, opportunities created, and the enduring legacy left behind.
