LASU RESPONDS TO ADMISSION RACKETEERING ALLEGATIONS, SAYS IT IS A “VICTIM OF ITS OWN SUCCESS”

Lagos State University (LASU) has reacted to widespread social media complaints and allegations surrounding its ongoing 2025/2026 admission exercise, describing the institution as a “victim of its own success.”

In a statement signed by Thomas-Onashile Oluwayemisi A., Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, the University clarified that admission into LASU remains merit-driven and in strict compliance with the Lagos State University Law 2004 (as amended).

According to the law, the University operates a 70:30 admission ratio in favour of Lagos State indigenes, while also admitting top-performing candidates across Nigeria and beyond. LASU stressed that after releasing the merit list based strictly on performance, indigenes of Lagos State are prioritised before other candidates are considered.

The University disclosed that it received over 70,000 applications in the 2025 JAMB UTME, making it the most subscribed university in Nigeria this year. However, fewer than 20 percent of applicants can be admitted, which, it said, has fuelled frustrations among many otherwise qualified candidates.

On the issue of alleged admission racketeering, LASU firmly denied that admission could be bought, emphasising that only the Vice-Chancellor holds the power to approve admissions.

“No member of staff has the authority or capacity to offer admission in exchange for money. Candidates are strongly advised that anyone making such claims is preying on desperation and cannot deliver on such promises,” the statement read.

The University further encouraged applicants or members of the public with verifiable evidence of racketeering to send reports to complaints.admissions@lasu.edu.ng, assuring that any staff member found culpable would face strict disciplinary measures.

While acknowledging the disappointment of unsuccessful candidates, LASU insisted it would not be coerced or blackmailed into exceeding its approved admission capacity.

“In the end, LASU’s greatest challenge is also the clearest evidence of its progress: that tens of thousands aspire to be part of our community. We are, indeed, victims of our own success,” the statement concluded.
