NANS CONDEMNS ASSAULT ON NYSC CORPS MEMBERS IN ANAMBRA, DEMANDS JUSTICE
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly condemned the reported assault on members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) by operatives of the Udogachi security forces in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The incident, which came to public attention through a viral video on social media, showed the corps members being physically assaulted in what many have described as a dehumanizing manner. The development has since sparked outrage across the country, particularly among students and young graduates.
In a statement signed by the association’s leadership, NANS expressed shock over the attack, describing it as “barbaric, unacceptable, and an affront to the dignity of Nigerian youths who are serving the nation.” The students’ body further called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the security personnel involved, stressing that such acts of violence undermine national unity and the objectives of the NYSC scheme.
NANS also appealed to the Anambra State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, and relevant federal authorities to ensure justice is served swiftly to restore public confidence and safeguard the welfare of corps members.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights of Nigerian students and graduates, while urging security agencies to show greater professionalism and restraint in their operations.
The NYSC scheme, established in 1973, is widely regarded as a cornerstone for national integration, with thousands of young graduates deployed yearly to different parts of the country. Incidents of harassment and assault on corps members, however, remain a source of concern to stakeholders in the education sector.
