LASU Directs Staff to Resume Work August 11

The Management of Lagos State University (LASU) has directed all staff members to resume work on Monday, 11th August 2025, following a crucial meeting involving the Lagos State Government, the university’s staff unions, and other stakeholders.

In a Special Virtual Meeting held on Friday, 8th August 2025, LASU Management reviewed the outcomes of a high-level engagement convened a day earlier by the Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, aimed at resolving the prolonged salary arrears crisis that had led to industrial action within the university.

Key Highlights from the Meeting:

1. Arrears Settlement:

The Deputy Governor disclosed that although the Lagos State Government had implemented the 25% / 35% salary increment for civil servants in December 2024, it had not covered the 23 months preceding the implementation. However, in a gesture of goodwill, the government has now approved the payment of 12 months out of the outstanding 23 months’ arrears.

2. Payment Timeline:

The government will disburse 9 months’ arrears in three instalments between August and October 2025.

LASU Management will settle the remaining 3 months from November 2025 to January 2026.

3. Further Negotiations:

The Deputy Governor assured stakeholders that the request for an additional 20% salary increment, as promised by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during his 2023 campaign, will be presented to the Governor for further deliberation.

4. Strike Suspension Plans:

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of LASU Staff Unions committed to holding a Congress on Friday, 8th August 2025, to formally suspend the ongoing strike, with effect from Monday, 11th August 2025.

5. Communiqué Agreement:

All parties present at the meeting, including the Deputy Governor, University Management, and staff union representatives, signed a joint communiqué affirming these resolutions.

In light of these developments, LASU Management has formally directed all staff to return to their respective duties by Monday, 11th August, and has encouraged peaceful and orderly conduct as academic and administrative activities resume fully.

The university also extended heartfelt appreciation to its staff for their patience, cooperation, and understanding during the difficult period of the dispute.
