UTME 2025: YOU CAN SIT UTME OUTSIDE YOUR STATE OF REGISTRATION — JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has debunked a recent report claiming that candidates registered for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) are not allowed to sit for the exam outside their state of registration.

In a statement issued by Dr. Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s Public Communication Advisor, the Board described the report—initially circulated by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)—as misleading and factually incorrect.

Dr. Benjamin clarified that UTME candidates have complete freedom to choose their examination towns regardless of their state of registration. According to him, the examination is designed to accommodate flexibility, allowing students to register anywhere in the country and pick any town of their choice to take the test.

“There is no policy restricting candidates to take the UTME in their state of registration,” he emphasized. “A candidate may register in Lagos and choose to take the exam in Sokoto or any other location across the country.”

He explained that JAMB’s Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres are grouped according to towns for logistical convenience. Therefore, once a candidate selects a particular town, they are assigned to a centre within that town—not outside it, as is sometimes wrongly assumed.

The Board urged candidates and the general public to disregard the false report and reassured all UTME candidates that their choice of examination town—regardless of registration location—will be respected.

This clarification aims to dispel confusion among candidates preparing for the upcoming UTME and to reaffirm JAMB’s commitment to transparency and candidate convenience.
