UNIJOS SENATE APPROVES ESTABLISHMENT OF FACULTY OF COMPUTING
Senate of the University of Jos has approved the establishment of a new Faculty of Computing, a decision that marks a significant milestone in the University’s Academic progression which is based on addressing the growing demand for skilled professionals trained in contemporary disciplines. The approval was granted through the Chairman of the University Senate and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tanko Ishaya, after thorough deliberation by Senate of the recommendation made by the Senate Curriculum Committee to that effect.
The Senate Curriculum Committee had undertaken a meticulous examination of the proposed curricula, ensuring that the Academic standards align with national and international benchmarks before submitting its recommendation to Senate.
The establishment of the Faculty of Computing in the University is subject to necessary approvals from the National Universities Commission (NUC) after undertaking an assessment of the programmes, facilities and resources to ensure compliance.
The new Faculty of Computing will comprise of the Departments of Computer Science, Cyber Security Science, Computer Information Science and Software Engineering.
Under these Departments, the University will offer a range of programmes, including Bachelors of Science in Cyber Security Science, Computer Information Systems, Data Science, Information Technology and Software Engineering. This is in addition to the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Computer Science, Master of Science in Computer Science and Ph.D. in Computer Science, which are currently available.
Similarly, Bachelors’ Degree Part-time options will be available in Cyber Security Science, Information Technology, and Computer Information Systems, further broadening access to Computing Education.
The University of Jos will also offer Executive programmes in Big Data in collaboration with Pairview from the United Kingdom, providing both Full-time and Part-time Master’s Degree programmes. Furthermore, Executive Certificate programmes will be launched in partnership with IBM, focusing on Data Sciences and Cloud Computing, alongside Diploma and Advanced Diploma offerings in Computer Science.
Being himself a Professor of Computer Science, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tanko Ishaya expressed optimism that the establishment of the Faculty of Computing will not only equip Students of the University with cutting-edge skills but also foster research and innovation in the computing field, contributing significantly to national development and the global economy. According to him, the University remains committed to providing quality education and promoting Research across various disciplines while fostering an environment of Academic excellence and preparing graduates to meet the challenges of a dynamic global environment.
