UNIBEN Students Union Rejects NANS’ Intervention in School Fees Hike Saga

UNIBEN Students Union Rejects NANS’ Intervention in School Fees Hike Saga

The National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) has issued a stern warning to the management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), giving them 96 hours to reverse the recent fee increments posted on the institution’s website.

In a statement, NANS mandated all UNIBEN students to refrain from paying the increased fees until the management rescinds its decision. The student body vowed to engage with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the rights of students are protected.

However, the UNIBEN Students’ Union (SU) has distanced itself from NANS’ ultimatum, stating that they were not consulted or involved in the issuance of the memo. The SU emphasized its commitment to protecting student interests through dialogue and structured negotiations, rather than external interventions.

“We do not welcome any attempt by NANS to introduce their ‘table manners’ approach into the affairs of UNIBEN students,” the SU said. “Our priority remains ensuring that student interests are represented transparently and effectively, without any external influence that does not serve our common good.”

In a statement, the UNIBEN SU urged students to disregard the NANS Zone B memo, stating that it does not represent the interests of the UNIBEN student body.

“We assure you that we will continue to advocate for the best possible outcomes for all students,” the SU said. “The Students’ Union remains the primary voice and channel through which students’ concerns are addressed with the university management.”
