UNILAG Students Protest ₦300,000 Field Trip Fee to Ghana
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) is facing a fresh wave of protests from students in the Marine Science Department, who are outraged over a mandatory ₦300,000 field trip fee to Ghana. Scheduled for January 2025, the 7-day trip aims to provide practical exposure for 400 and 500-level students.
Students describe the fee as exorbitant and unaffordable, especially considering recent increments in school and hostel fees. “This trip is a burden on us, especially with the current economic situation,” said a 400-level student, who wished to remain anonymous. “We’re struggling to pay our school fees, and now we’re expected to cough up ₦300,000.”
The compulsory nature of the trip has also raised concerns, as students fear it may impact their Continuous Assessment (CA) scores and overall CGPA. “We’re under pressure to pay the fee by December 1, 2024, or risk failing our courses,” another student lamented.
Despite attempts to reach the university management for comment, Professor Charles Onyema, Head of the Marine Science Department, directed inquiries to the university management.
This development follows recent protests over hostel fee hikes in the medical college, with students calling on the university to reconsider the fee and explore alternative, more affordable options.
Students are demanding a review of the ₦300,000 field trip fee, alternative options for practical exposure, and consideration of students’ financial burdens.
The protest highlights growing concerns over the commercialization of education in Nigeria and the need for universities to prioritize students’ welfare.
