BACKGROUND

University of Ibadan Increases School Fees and Sets Payment Deadline

The Governing Council of the University of Ibadan has officially approved an increase in school fees for students across all levels, from 100 to 400. This decision, communicated through a statement signed by the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, G.O. Saliu, was released on Thursday and is available via UCJUI.

The council’s decision followed an inaugural meeting where the new levy, as recommended by the Senate of the University, was thoroughly considered. As part of the update, students who have not yet completed their registration are strongly urged to do so by Wednesday, September 4, 2024. This deadline is crucial as departments will need to download lists of registered students in preparation for the First Semester Examination.

Additionally, the council highlighted the availability of financial aids, such as the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and various scholarships, to assist students facing financial difficulties. It was also made clear that there would be no extension of the registration deadline, with the portal closing after the specified date.

According to the report gathered by the UCJUI,  on the 29th of August, 2024, Students of the University of Ibadan mobilized themselves, following the memo announcing fee increment approval by the Governing Council of the Institution.

The memo also announced Wednesday, September 6, 2024, as the deadline for payment of these fees.

ON Friday 30th of August, 2024, UI Protesters Escalated Actions with New Resolutions, Reject Proposed 3-Week Deadline

The Students have responded to the Management proposed three-week deadline for tuition fee payments with a set of strong new resolutions.

The students have rejected the deadline and have made it clear that they will continue their protest until their demands are fully met.

The resolution of the Congress includes the following:

1. Staying in school and stopping all operation both academic and non academic
2. We are marching to Sasa, nobody is writing exam and signing negotiations
3. Without student there is no UI,We are staying in school and lock school gate we are not going home
4. Making use of our social media and demonstrating everyday until our demands our meet
5. We are not making installment payment

MANAGEMENT RESPONSE

On Saturday, 31st of August, 2024, the management ordered immediate vacation of students hostel and announced a 3weeks break.

STUDENT RESPONSE ONCE MORE

UI Students Set to Resume Protests in Response to Three-Week Break Memo

Following the University of Ibadan’s announcement of a three-week break, students are once again mobilizing to resume their protests, which have been ongoing for the past three days.

The memorandum, released earlier today by the Office of the Registrar, has sparked renewed anger among the student body, leading to calls for immediate action.

The management’s decision, which mandates that all students vacate campus by 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 31, 2024, has been met with widespread criticism. Students perceive the break as a ploy to weaken the momentum of their protests against the recent hike in tuition fees.

In response, student are rallying their peers to gather once more, with the intent to continue their demonstrations until their demands are met.

Student protests have gained momentum as demonstrators mobilized from ZIK Hall, making their way to Independence Hall (Indy), and covering all other halls of residence along their route.

Despite the growing numbers, some students still remain resistant to joining the protest. The protesters are currently marching towards the Student Union Building, signaling the possibility of a larger demonstration

The situation remains fluid as the protest unfolds, with the potential for further developments as the day progresses.
