CAC TO SHUT DOWN UNREGISTERED POS OPERATORS FROM JANUARY 1

The Corporate Affairs Commission has directed all Point-of-Sale operators nationwide to complete their registration before 1 January 2026, warning that enforcement will begin immediately after the deadline.

In a notice issued on 6 December 2025, the CAC criticised the rising number of unregistered PoS agents, describing it as a breach of CAMA 2020 and CBN Agent Banking Regulations. The Commission warned that the trend, often aided by some fintech firms, poses risks to the financial system and citizens’ funds.

From the effective date, security agencies will seize or shut down unregistered PoS terminals, while fintech companies enabling illegal operations will be placed on a watchlist and reported to the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The CAC urged operators to regularise their status promptly, stressing that compliance is mandatory.
