AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY (ABU) ANNONCES REVISED DRESS CODES FOR STAFFS AND STUDENTS

In a recent bulletin published by the Public Affairs Directorate, the Management of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has released a revised version of its official dress code, introducing clearer standards on what constitutes indecent dressing and unacceptable appearance within the university environment.

The move comes as part of the university’s renewed commitment to uphold discipline and maintain decorum on campus. According to the bulletin (Volume 17, No. 34), the ABU Dress Code Implementation Committee, which was recently reconstituted, reviewed the policy to cover both students and staff across all faculties and units.

The updated dress code identifies a range of clothing and grooming styles now considered inappropriate. These include skimpy dresses, tattered jeans, body-revealing outfits, dreadlocks, multi-coloured braids, sagging, tattoos, and public displays of affection, among others. Specific gender-related infractions such as earrings or plaited hair on male students and long eyelashes or ankle chains on female students were also highlighted.

To enforce compliance, a structured disciplinary framework has been outlined. First-time offenders will undergo counselling, while second-time offenders may be denied access to university facilities such as classrooms or libraries. Third-time offenders risk appearing before either the Advisory Committee on Students’ Discipline or the Staff Disciplinary Committee, depending on their category.

The university emphasized that every student must remain visibly identifiable, especially in security-sensitive areas such as examination halls and lecture theatres. The enforcement of this policy is expected to begin immediately.

This development reflects ABU’s broader mission, as stated in its founding law of 1962, to foster an environment of academic excellence, cultural pride, and responsible citizenship.
