ASUU raises concerns over sudden increase in first-class graduates from private universities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has sounded the alarm over the alarming rate at which private universities in Nigeria are churning out first-class graduates. This trend has been observed in recent convocation ceremonies, where a staggering number of students have been awarded first-class honors.

At the heart of ASUU’s concerns is the potential undermining of academic integrity. According to ASUU National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the proliferation of first-class graduates from private universities could set a dangerous precedent if public universities follow suit without proper regulation. Osodeke worries that these graduates may not possess the academic prowess their degrees suggest.

Osodeke also highlighted the systemic issues plaguing Nigeria’s education sector. He pointed to the decline in quality education at the foundational level, where primary and secondary schools are producing students with impressive grades but woefully inadequate knowledge. This, Osodeke argued, sets the stage for a weak educational foundation that undermines the very fabric of Nigeria’s education system.

Furthermore, Osodeke bemoaned the brain drain and institutional failures that have led to the mass exodus of skilled Nigerian professionals to foreign shores. He attributed this trend to systemic issues, including the decline in educational and institutional standards.

In response to these challenges, ASUU has called for stricter academic standards to ensure the integrity of Nigerian university degrees. The union has also advocated for regulatory measures to prevent the proliferation of substandard universities in Nigeria.

Moreover, ASUU has emphasized the need for improved welfare for academic staff. The union believes this is crucial in preventing brain drain and ensuring that Nigerian universities can attract and retain top talent.

Ultimately, the surge in first-class graduates from private universities in Nigeria raises important questions about academic integrity and the quality of education in the country. ASUU’s calls for stricter standards and regulation are a step in the right direction towards ensuring that Nigerian university degrees retain their value and integrity.
